As you know, we were delighted to recently win Bedbuyer’s 'Mattress of the Year 2024' for our Signature Mattress.
Bedbuyer is Australia's #1 bedding website and is a mattress review and comparison website. The annual "Bedbuyer Best Bed Awards” recognise outstanding mattresses based on various criteria, including comfort, support, durability, value for money and overall customer satisfaction.
Bedbuyer tests out hundreds of mattresses each year, so we couldn’t be prouder to have been appointed Australia’s ‘Mattress of the Year’ and ‘Luxury Mattress of the Year’ in 2024.
To celebrate our recent award wins, we caught up with the CEO of Bedbuyer, Jon Tan to discuss the awards in further detail.
Q. Please tell us a little bit about the annual Bedbuyer Mattress of the Year Awards?
Jon. Bedbuyer's Mattress of the Year Award has been running since 2017. After testing so many products each year, we wanted to acknowledge and recognise a mattress that presented the best all-round package to Australian consumers. We consider this to be the most prestigious award in the Australian mattress/bedding market. We have tested over 1,800 mattresses over the last 10 years.
Q. What criteria does Bedbuyer use to evaluate mattresses in the overall Best Mattress category?
Jon. We use a number of criteria - comfort, back support, build quality, partner disturbance, and value for money. Our experience of a company's customer service, delivery process, and professional integrity are also factors that are considered.
Q. Can you take us through the selection process for the overall mattress of the year award?
Jon. Towards the end of each year, our review team looks at all new and current mattresses to begin shortlisting products that are worthy for the Mattress of the Year award. Deciding on the very best product is usually very difficult, as there are typically a number of mattresses that are worthy of the award each year. Ultimately though, our team must decide on one winner!
Q. What trends have you observed in the mattress industry through your annual awards?
Jon. One trend that has been noticeable (over the last 5-7 years) is that bed shoppers are much more willing to buy a mattress online than in the past. This is usually motivated by price, as buying online often means big savings when compared with buying in-store. Some customers still prefer to buy in-store, but retail showrooms do have large overhead costs that are ultimately passed onto customers.
Q. How important is innovation in mattress design when considering contenders for the awards?
Jon. Product design and innovation is always something that we consider highly when deciding on our awards. With so many products available, modern technology, clever design, and unique features can often make a product stand out from the rest.
Q. Can you share some insights into consumer preferences based on the winners of previous years?
Jon. Customers are usually motivated by price, but are still happy to pay a reasonable amount if they see value in a more expensive product. Without intention, our Mattress of the Year winners are generally priced similarly, which is likely where quality and value intersect.
Q. Are there any particular challenges or surprises you encounter when selecting the winners each year?
Jon. Possibly the biggest challenge is to manage expectations. As you can imagine, many companies believe that their mattress should be Mattress of the Year and there can only be one winner each year. It's always a nice moment informing the winner, but it also involves a lot of disappointment. Product awards such as Mattress of the Year create a lot of trust and reassurance with customers, and not surprisingly, are very valuable in terms of marketing.
Q. This year’s overall Mattress of the Year was Dusk&Dawn Signature MK2 Mattress, what set this particular mattress apart from the others?
Jon. Our team felt that based on its quality, comfort, and price, this mattress presented the best overall package in 2024. Its blend of these elements should give this product a very wide appeal.
Q. Can you highlight any key features of Dusk&Dawn mattresses that impressed the judges?
Jon. The edge support on the Dusk&Dawn Signature was very impressive, especially in the firm and medium versions. The comfort layer which includes graphite memory foam and micro pocket springs was also a stand out feature.
Thank you so much Jon for sharing these insights into the Bedbuyer Mattress of the Year Awards and congratulations to all the other award winners this year.
