When it comes to a good night’s sleep, choosing the right mattress is essential. With a plethora of options available in the Australian market, finding the perfect mattress can be overwhelming. To help you make an informed decision, let’s take a look at the different types of mattresses and the key differences between each one.
#1 – Innerspring coil Mattresses:
Innerspring mattresses were traditionally the most common mattress type and they are still widely available. They are constructed with a steel coil support system. The number, shape and gauge of the coils can vary, affecting the firmness and support. These mattresses provide good airflow, keeping you cool during warm Australian nights.
Innerspring mattresses come in various firmness levels, catering to different sleep preferences. The traditional design has evolved in recent years and some premium innerspring mattresses feature individually-wrapped coils, reducing motion transfer and ensuring a more undisturbed sleep.
#2 – Memory foam mattresses:
Memory foam mattresses are known for their contouring abilities. The majority of memory foam mattresses are made offshore and as such are an inferior product to a locally made mattress.
They do respond well to body heat and pressure, conforming to your body shape for personalized support. These mattresses are also good for relieving pressure points, making them ideal for individuals with back pain or joint issues. Traditional memory foam retains body heat, but some pricey modern versions have been engineered with cooling technologies to mitigate heat retention. Keep in mind it can be very expensive to source a quality memory foam mattress that is locally made. It really comes down to what you are willing to pay for your mattress.
# 3 Latex foam Mattresses:
Latex mattresses are crafted from natural or synthetic latex foam. Latex mattresses are not as widely available as other types of mattresses.
They offer a buoyant and responsive feel, combining the contouring benefits of memory foam with a bit more bounce. Natural latex mattresses are eco-friendly and hypoallergenic, making them a popular choice for environmentally-conscious consumers. However it is important to note that some consumers report that latex mattresses retain too much heat, making them too warm at night. Further, while they are generally hypoallergenic, some people may still have a latex allergy, making them an unsuitable choice. Latex mattresses are solid so not suited to those who prefer a softer mattress. They can also be hard to move due to their weight.
#4 Mattress-in-a-box:
Mattresses-in-a-box are are usually made of foam or foam-like materials. 90% (or more) of mattresses-in-a-box are made offshore, making them an inferior quality to a locally made mattress. They are delivered compressed in vacuum-sealed packaging, however are shipped in bulk, meaning their materials may be compressed for up to 6 months. This can affect the foam quality and many find that their mattresses don’t fully inflate as they should. They are generally cheaper than conventional mattresses and as such don’t provide the same level of comfort, or comfort level options, as a premium hybrid mattress.
#5 - Hybrid mattresses:
Hybrid Mattresses combine the very best of a memory foam and innerspring mattress, with all the bells and whistles from these styles of bedding, plus some added luxuries. They are a perfect mix of memory foam and spring mattresses and blend different materials, usually combining innerspring coils with memory foam. This combination aims to provide the best of both worlds – the support of innerspring and the comfort of foam. Hybrid mattresses are versatile and can be customized to ensure an exceptional sleep experience and cater to a wide range of sleepers with varying preferences for firmness and support. The innerspring core offers robust support, while the top layers provide cushioning and contouring for pressure relief.
